Microinteractions
I came back to work so inspired by the UX Immersions: Interactions conference. One of my favorite workshops was Dan Saffer's "Designing the Critical Details using Microinteractions." I realized in that workshop that the most common tasks in our application should really be on the home page! It was such a radical improvement, with almost no extra development time. The actions were already coded, so it didn't create a lot of extra work to duplicate them on our home page. And the users were really thrilled because we put shortcuts to the things we do the most right on the first page they saw. Win win!
The most common tasks in our application were "search for a person" and "start a case." So we put a "Start a Case" button under the link to the Cases page.
We we put a search box under the Profile page link, so you could search for a person right on the home page.
